Dear Colleagues,

we want to make sure that you and your students are aware of the opportunity to participate in both a Summer School in Cimate Dynamics and  the WCRP Grand Challenge on Clouds, Circulation and Climate Sensitivity: 2nd Meeting on Monsoons and Tropical Rain Belts, hosted by the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy  during June, 25 - July 5 2018.

Participation to the workshop (school) requires that you submit an abstract (application) by March 1st, 2018  on line: http://indico.ictp.it/event/8457/ (http://indico.ictp.it/event/8318/) — See forwarded email below for more info.

The agenda for the workshop is under construction, but here is our tentative summary of the themes and the keynote speakers for each day:

DAY 1: Theory and Large Scale Dynamics (Monday, July 2nd)
William Boos, U.Cal Berkeley, USA  Climatology and Variability of Tropical Rain Belts: Theory & Hierarchical Modeling.
John Marshall, MIT, USA  Ocean Dynamics’ effect on Tropical Rain Belts: Theory & Hierarchical Modeling.
DAY 2 Convection & Surface Processes (Tuesday, July 3rd )
Christian Jakob, Monash U., Australia   Convective Rainfall: Progress and Challenges in Observations and Modeling.
Sonia Seneviratne, ETH Zürich, Switzerland  Land Surface and Vegetation: Progress and Challenges in Observations and Modeling.
DAY 3 Current & Paleo Monsoons (Wednesday, July 4th  )
Mahyar Mohtadi , Marum, Bremen, Germany.  Paleo Monsoons:  Progress and Challenges in Observations and Modeling.
Andrew Turner, U. Reading, UK  Modern Monsoons:  Progress and Challenges in Observations and Modeling
DAY 4 Future Monsoons (Thursday, July 5th  )
Hui Su, JPL, USA  Future Changes in Tropical Rain Belts: Cloud & Aerosol Processes.
Tianjun Zhou, IAP China  Future Changes in Tropical Rain Belts:  the latest from comprehensive models. We expect to be able to accomodate about 10 talks and 10 posters per day.

Partial travel support is available for a limited number of early career scientists from the developing world and Europe. We are in the process of seeking additional funding for US early career scientists.

Looking forward to seeing you in Trieste!
The Organizing Committee:
Michela Biasutti (Columbia University), Aiko Voigt (KIT), Mike Byrne (Imperial College), Riccardo Farneti (ICTP), Fred Kucharski (ICTP), Anna Pirani (Universite' Paris-Saclay), and Adrian Tompkins (ICTP).
